Hindering my children's literacy

I don't usually use my blog to vent but my trip to the library yesterday put me over the edge. I decided after naptime that the three of us would head to the local library to check out a few fun books. It gets a little boring just reading the same ones over & over again & on previous visits the kids have both had a lot of fun getting to pick out their own books. I knew that I had returned our books late a few months ago & figured there would be a fine of some sort...little did I know.

We browse through the titles & brightly colored pages of a few books & Kenzie quickly makes her choices. Preston on the other hand, decides to wander. Not a big deal for the most part until he starts making these horribly loud squeals. Apparently he thought EVERYONE in the silent library should hear his sweet little voice & my repeated plea to "shhhhhhhhhhhh" was NOT working.

I wrangle Preston & somehow manage to carry him, all of our book choices, along with my baby bump up to the counter. Being the honest person that I am, I inform the 15 year old boy that I have late fees. To keep Preston from running mad dash in the opposite direction, I set him on the counter (holding firmly to avoid all accidents). While this librarian informs me that I have $45.00 in late fees, my son decides to throw all flyers within his reach, onto the floor. Being overtly shocked at the total I am expected to pay, I decide to argue. Apparently it is like $5.00/day for each late video you check out. I might as well have went to Target & purchased the movies myself. What was I thinking?!

[Breathe]. I set Preston on the floor because I can no longer keep him under control & my giant bump doesn't exactly allow me to hold him longer than 2 minutes at a time. He smiles & runs. I pay the fee. He checks out my books & is clearly glad that I'm about to leave. As I am about to walk away with my pile of books he says "do you need a bag to carry those?"

Alleluia! What part gave that away? The fact that we just checked out most of the children's section? The fact that I'm also carrying a 21 month old? Or maybe it was the baby bump that made him finally think to himself...poor woman...she must need some help.

  1. Oh, Stacie, that stinks! Those movies can be brutal if you don't keep track - you can renew them for a week, and I do that online if I know I won't make it in time. I also bring a canvas bag with me (it's our official library bag) and use the self-check-out. Which will make you go to the desk anyway if you have more than $10 in late fees.

    Better luck next time!
